John Carlson

This is one of the painting demonstations in my book, Big Art, Small Canvas. I was looking at his paintings and got inspired to do a landscape from memory. I love Carlson's landscapes. And since I've spent a lot of time in the same place he did; Woodstock, NY I can relate. He painted mainly during the winter because of his teaching schedule at The Woodstock School of Art which was during the summer. I find I get much more work done in the winter as well since the summer activities of swimming is so alluring to me being a double Pisces. His book on landscape painting is fabulous- Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting. This painting is 3 3/4 by 2 1/2 inches, oil on board, POR

I also love Carlson's landscapes. Especially the trees. Emile Gruppe is another one who's trees are incredible. He was a student or peer of John Carlson's.
Beautiful painting Joyce.

I was doing some research on J Carlsons landscape paintings and I stumbled onto your blog, the name Joyce Washor looked familiar then I scrolled down, I HAVE YOUR BOOK AND I LOVE IT! I refer to it all the time, I'm so tired I wasn't connecting. I'm painting 50 paintings in 50 days as a gallery challenge, the size is 6x6. I found out it's just as hard to paint a small one. Love your work Joyce. I have a blog too, my theme for the paintings is shoes.
